This workshop is intended to bring together approximately 150 postdoctoral investigators who will soon be seeking their first independent positions. While the transition to independence is a challenge for all postdocs, young investigators who are members of groups that are underrepresented in the biomedical or behavioral sciences may have an especially difficult time finding and establishing themselves in their first independent positions. For this reason, emphasis will be placed on members of these groups.

The goal of the workshop is to cover a broad range of topics that postdocs will need to make a successful transition to independence, including making the right career choice, finding the right institutional fit, applying for a position, succeeding in the job interview and seminar, negotiating a start up package, establishing a lab, finding a mentor, networking and forming collaborations, applying for and getting a grant, undergoing the tenure process, teaching, and balancing research with many other commitments. Although the focus is on academic positions, the participants will also have an opportunity to learn about other scientific careers.

For more information see the NIGMS website.

Hello. 10/03/2011

Hello Post Docs,

As you may have noticed, emails and website posts are now coming from two new people (Te-Wen Lo and Ling Song), so I thought that I would take a moment to introduce ourselves.  I (Te-Wen) am a post doc in the Meyer lab and Ling is a post doc in the Rape lab.  We are very excited to be taking over for Fred and Virginie.  Thanks to the great job that they did getting the Post Doc Lunch Club started, we are well set up to have a great year.  We've already had a great meeting last month with an informative chalk talk seminar and we have lots of other great ideas, but we want to hear what you think.  We want to know how the Post Doc lunch club can best serve the post doc community.  To do this, we need your input.  You can either come to the next meeting which is on October 7th in Barker 434 at noon where we will discuss potential ideas for future meeting, or you can send us a message via this website by clicking on the link on the right side of the page.  If you think that you might come to the next meeting on October 7th, please RSVP.

Thanks.

We look forward to seeing you.

Cheers,
Te-Wen and Ling

October 7th PDLC 09/29/2011

A friendly reminder that the next Post Doc Lunch Club will be on Friday,
October 7th in 434 Barker Hall at 12:00pm.  We are hoping to use this
meeting as an organizational meeting to discuss topics/ideas for future
Post Doc Lunch Club meetings.  So we hope that you will join us and share
any ideas of topics or concerns that you would like to be discussed at
future Post Doc Lunch Clubs.

Please RSVP (on the right-hand bar) if you haven't yet and if you think you may come so that we
can order enough food.

As always, we are looking for volunteers to help us organize future Post
Doc Lunch Clubs.  Let us know if you're interested!

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Cheers,
Te-Wen and Ling
